The sebaceous glands are microscopic glands in the skin that secrete an oily/waxy matter, called sebum, to lubricate and waterproof the skin and hair.
Function
Lubrication, protection, and waterproofing of the skin and hair, and helps prevent dehydration. Grease also lubricates scalp and hair. Sebum may also be a delivery system for antioxidants, antimicrobial lipids, pheromones, and hydration for the stratum corneum. Additionally providing Vitamin E to the upper layers of facial skin.

Sebaceous glands are found in greatest abundance on the face and scalp, although they are distributed all over the skin except the palms and soles (hence these become wrinkled after spending too long in the bath.)
