Are we different from others? Are we special in any way that makes us stand out from everyone else? I don’t think so but of course we are all better at somethings than others, and worse at other things than others their essentially is nothing to distinguish us from anyone else when we get right down to it.
On the surface I am white, male, 6’2”, speak English, and have two ears, eyes arms, legs, feet, hands, a body with about 8 pints of blood in it (I think), not unlike allot of people who will read this I guess with some minor differences such as height, sex, skin colour, and eye colour, may be different, but we all have two eyes, ears, arms, legs, hands, feet, a body, lungs, heart, kidneys, liver, and so on, and one thing which make us more alike than all of our differences, we all want to be happy.
There is a meditation called loving kindness but some people break it up so I am going to explain one part of it at a time instead of explaining it all together. there are two types of people in the world yourself, and myself, now the myself is me the person I am, and the yourself is everyone who is not me. The myself can only be broken down into parts such as hear of the head, hair of the body, nails, teeth, skin, etc, but the yourself can be broken down into groups as well before broken down into hair of the head, hear of the body, nails, teeth, skin, etc, into groups of people we know and people we don’t know. The people we don’t know can now be broken down into hair of the head, hair, of the body, nails, teeth, skin, etc but the people we do know can be divided into friends, and enemies, or people we like and those we don’t. So let’s imagine in front of us three groups of people, on the left are the people we like, and on the right people we don’t like, and standing between them are those we don’t know.
They are the four groups and we are going to look at the differences between each group with loving kindness in turn starting with yourself although you may want to picture just one person you like, hate, and someone you don‘t know to make it easier to start with. Why do you like yourself? Why do you love yourself? Just, why? What is special about you? Feel in you grow love for yourself, not a physical love but an emotional love. Now let’s look at the group on the left, those people who we do like, why do you like them? What is it about them that you like? Just, why? What is special about them for you to like them? Now extend the love you feel for you to them, moving on to those we hate the group on the right, why do you hate them? What is it about them that you hate? Just, why? What is special about them for you to hate them? How are they different to those you like? When I get to this part I think well I have arguments with friends and my enemies just disagree with me more so their really isn’t a difference between them. But now look at those in between, those we don’t know. Why don’t you feel anything for them? What is it about them that make you indifferent? Just, why? I don’t know them but are they different in any other way to those we do or those we don’t? Now we can see the differences as not being much and extended love towards each group we can look closer at the body as we all have
