Who you think I am, I am not. Who I think I am, I am not. This was my introduction header to my former blog site on the now partially extinct site Multiply, and recently I have been faced with questions about concepts or conversations about concepts such as the title of this blog. The word concept means one of four things 1. something thought or imagined; 2. broad principle affecting perception and behaviour; 3. understanding or grasp; 4. way of doing or perceiving something, and just with these meanings we can see the wide range of things that the term can imply; One could say that a concept is any mental formation used to understand what is.
We use many things to understand or to project our understanding of the world, such as our speech - the words we use to describe things are just a concept, an Idea of what the actual thing is - however, that is still somewhat akin to pointing toward the moon and thinking the tip of the finger is what is referred to. We can think all types of wondrous things but they aren't real, they aren't the actual thing itself. Just because we say something happens with something else, doesn't mean that it necessarily does causally, or that it does all of the time. These objects stay how they were before, separate, yet can meet in a miriad of ways.
At the end of the day I may be right, I may be wrong, but I share this hoping I am one or the other.
