Impermanence

7/7/2012

The Buddha teaches us everything is impermanent, be it feelings, perceptions, forms, sounds, stress, life, or happiness, and we can see the earth is impermanent through earthquakes, erosion, corrosion and so forth, everything changes, and nothing can be found within or outside us that can be called permanent, consistent, or stable.

If we find pleasure, say in drugs, sex, or hobbies, the first buzz we get is great, then we search for that again, and again, and again only to have to take bigger and bigger doses to get the same feelings. Why do we do this? We all want happiness, and it is this search for happiness that causes addiction to things, be they healthy or otherwise, as it is an easy route to happiness, however addiction isn't happiness, as it is so dependent upon a "thing" that it causes more sorrow than joy.

I believe certain emotions are like little devils & angels on our shoulders telling us that this will last when it won't, or this isn't how it seams, so a good reflection here is
“All that becomes mine, dear & pleasing, will become otherwise & separated from me.”
A meditator should often reflect on this.
AN10.48 excerpt
this reflection develops equipoise, while dealing with impermanence, and a sense of things being impersonal; so these emotions are a call to reflection in the instability; uncertainty, & impermanent nature of life.

At the end of the day I may be right, I may be wrong, but I share this hoping I am one or the other.

All that is loving and soothing, is changing and moving. Good to be reminded. Sadhu!
