(The mendicants asked) What are these ten?
1 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “Harm was done to me, but what was their gain;”
2 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “Harm is being done to me, but what is their gain;”
3 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “Harm will be done to me, but what shall be their gain;”
4 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “harm was done to those whom I love and are dear to me, but what was their gain;”
5 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “harm is being done to those whom I love and are dear to me, but what is their gain;”
6 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “harm will be done to those whom I love and are dear to me, but what shall be their gain;”
7 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “harm was done to those whom I dislike and find detestable, but what was my gain;”
8 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “harm is being done to those whom I dislike and find detestable, but what is my gain;”
9 - Hatred is subdued (by thinking), “harm will be done to those whom I dislike and find detestable, but what shall be my gain;”
10 - And is not angered by impossibilities.
Mendicants, these are the ten means to subdue hatred.
