Opposites, Duality, to choose one thing or the other? Our normal everyday mind perceives things like Male, and Female, Tall, and Short, Mine, and yours, as a form of self grasping, a constant grabbing at a being who IS,
but let me start at the beginning, of course there are opposites such as male, and female, tall, and short, but these are contrasts in the life of beings, they are not who we are, but what we are, if no one was around we would just be. Sometimes when I meditate I can be in a room full of people, or on my own it doesn’t matter, but what does matter is that I am focused on the breath, and let everything else go, as everything is already perfect as it is, and when I do this something happens I loose a concept of difference, I don’t mean everything is one, or I cant tell the difference between things, but I stop seeing things as separate I see things as they are in a way as, as themselves with no explanation needed to justify the way they are, as only I can.
In the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu's it says “If all on earth acknowledge the beautiful, as beautiful then thereby the ugly is already posited” I think this line forms perfectly what opposites actually are, and that is the mental note that things are not the same, not identical, and we have created a spectrum of associations for the very similar to the opposite, and what we do, and do not like, when we acknowledge things as different we label them, and ourselves, it becomes that, or this, yours, or mine, ours, or theirs, and not itself, or ourselves all due to a label which describes what it looks like, which bring attachment to our perception of like and dislike.
Another verse from the Tao Te Ching says “The Tao that can be explained is not the eternal Tao” for those who don’t know, Tao means way, but in Taoism it has a subtle context on life, so it could read the life which can be explained is not the eternal life, and that is all dualities are, a way to name things, to label them, to create possessions in the mind.
Things do exist, but not as we know them to, good is only good for evil exist, but really neither exist they are just something that happens, and it is our attachment to things that brings in a distinction, nothing more, nothing less.
At the end of the day I may be right, I may be wrong, but I share this hoping I am one or the other.
