There the fortunate one addressed the group of five meditators, saying: “Mendicants, there are these two extremes that one who has gone forth should not associate oneself with, which is this, devotion to the pleasure & happiness found in sensuous pleasures, which is base, vulgar, belonging to ordinary beings, ignoble, connected with harm; and the devotion to self-mortification, which is stressful, ignoble connected with harm.
Mendicants, not swaying towards either of these two extremes, the middle mode of conduct was realised by the awakened one, which produces vision, produces knowledge, leading to calm, understanding, full awakening and Nibbānā.
Mendicants, what is the practice of the middle way, that was realised by the authentic one, which produces vision, produces knowledge, leading to calm, understanding, full awakening and Nibbānā?
It is this Noble eight factored path, which is as follows: i. upright perspective, ii. upright Intention, iii. upright speech, iv. upright action, v. upright means of support, vi. upright effort, vii. upright mindfulness, viii. upright concentration.
Mendicants, this is the practice of the middle way, was realised by the awakened one, which produces vision, produces knowledge, leading to calm, understanding, full awakening and Nibbānā.
The Four Noble Truths
Mendicants, this is the noble truth of stress: birth is stressful, as is old age is stressful, just as death is stressful, and grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow, and despair are stressful as being associated with what is not liked is stressful, and separated from what is liked is stressful also not to obtain what one longs for is stressful in brief, the five sensual aggregates that condition the appearance of life, and provide fuel for attachment are stressful.
Mendicants, now this is the noble truth of the origination of stress: it is craving that leads to rebirth that is connected with passionate delight, rejoicing here and there, as follows: craving for sensual pleasures, craving for re-becoming, craving for no more becoming.
Mendicants, now this is the noble truth of the destruction of stress it is the total fading away and bringing to an end without any craving remaining abandoning, giving up, release, and freedom from attachment.
Mendicants, this is the noble truth of the practice leading to the destruction of stress: just this noble eight factored path, as follows: i. upright perspective, ii. upright Intention, iii. upright speech, iv. upright action, v. upright means of support, vi. upright effort, vii. upright mindfulness, viii. Upright concentration.

Declaring the Awakening
Mendicants, as long as I, regarding these four noble truths - turned each in three ways, thus twelve fold – insightful understanding into the way it is, was not clear, Mendicants, for that period of time I did not declare to the world with its gods, māras and brahmas, to this generation of ascetics and brahmins, princes and men, that I had attained the unsurpassed highest awakening, and am a completely awakened one.
Mendicants, but, when I had, in regard to these four noble truths - turned each in three ways, thus twelve fold - insightful understanding into the way it is, was clear, Mendicants, then I did declare to the world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmas, to this generation of ascetics and brahmins, princes and men, that I had attained the unsurpassed highest awakening, and am a completely awakened one.
For me insight and understanding arose: “Unshakable is my freedom, this is my last birth, there is now, no continuation of being.”
The First Attainment
The fortunate One said this, and the group-of-five Meditators were delighted by the fortunate ones words.
As this discourse was being given, for the Venerable Koṇḍanna the stainless, dust-free, Dhamma eye arose: whatever is of the nature to arise, also has the nature to cease.
The Gods of the Sense World
Now that the fortunate one had set rolling the wheel of dhamma the Earth gods made a noise, saying: “The fortunate one, while near Bārāṇasī, in the Deer Park at Isipatana, set the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma rolling, that cannot be rolled back by an ascetic or brahmin, god, māra,brahma or by any being in the world.”
Having heard what the earth gods had said, the gods called the Four Great Kings made a noise, saying:

Having heard what the Nimmāṇarati gods said, the Paranimmitavasavatti gods made a noise, saying:
The Gods of the Form World
Having heard what the Paranimmitavasavatti gods said, the Brahmakāyikū gods made a noise, saying: “The fortunate one, while near Bārāṇasī, in the Deer Park at Isipatana, set the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma rolling, that cannot be rolled back by an ascetic or brahmin, god, māra,brahma or by any being in the world.”
So at that very moment, the noise rose up to the Brahma worlds, and the ten thousand world-element trembled, shook, and was affected, due to the boundless and noble light manifested in the world, transcending the divinity of the gods.
Then the fortunate one spoke these joyful words: “Koṇḍanna Knows, Koṇḍanna surely knows.”
So the Venerable Koṇḍanna came to be known as Insightful Koṇḍanna.
