The meditators asked: 'Burning due to what?'
The Fortunate One explained: Burning due to the fires of lust, hate, & delusion; I say, ablaze with birth, ageing & death, with grief, lamentation, pain, sorrow & despair!
The ear burns, Sounds burn, ear consciousness burns, and contact at the ear burns, and whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the ear, experienced as pleasure, pain, or neither-pleasure-nor-pain, that too is burning.

The nose burns, smells burn, nose consciousness burns, and contact at the nose burns, and whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the nose, experienced as pleasure, pain, or neither-pleasure-nor-pain, that too is burning.

The mind burns, fabrications burn, mind consciousness burns and contact at the mind burns, and whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the mind, experienced as pleasure, pain, or neither-pleasure-nor-pain, that too is burning.
The meditators asked: 'Burning due to what?'
Burns with the fire of passion, the fire of aversion, the fire of delusion. burns, i tell you, with birth, ageing & death, with sorrows, lamentations, pains, distresses, & despairs.
[Mendicants, understanding this,] the well-instructed Noble Disciple grows weary with the eye, weary with forms, weary with consciousness at the eye, weary with contact at the eye, and anything that arises due to contact at the eye is experienced as pleasant painful or neither pleasant not painful: this too is found wearisome.
There develops weariness with the ear, weary with sounds, weary with ear consciousness, and weary with contact at the ear, and anything that arises due to contact at the ear is experienced as pleasant painful or neither pleasant not painful: this too is found wearisome.
There develops weariness with the nose, weary with smells, weary with nose consciousness, and weary with contact at the nose, and anything that arises due to contact at the nose is experienced as pleasant painful or neither pleasant not painful: this too is found wearisome.
There develops weariness with the tongue, weary with tastes, weary with tongue consciousness,and weary with contact at the tongue, and anything that arises due to contact at the tongue is experienced as pleasant painful or neither pleasant not painful: this too is found wearisome.
There develops weariness with the body, weary with tactile sensations, weary with body consciousness, and weary with contact at the body, and anything that arises due to contact at the body is experienced as pleasant painful or neither pleasant not painful: this too is found wearisome.
There develops weariness with the mind, weary with fabrications, weary with mind consciousness, and weary with contact at the mind, and anything that arises due to contact at the mind is experienced as pleasant painful or neither pleasant not painful: this too is found wearisome.
Wearied there develops dis-passion, from dis-passion, comes released, with release, there is the understanding, 'Released.' one knows that, 'Birth has ended, the chaste life has been fulfilled, what should be done , is done. There is nothing further to do.'"
[Once the fortunate one had said this,] those meditators were delighted by these words of the fortunate one and greatly rejoiced in them. Moreover, while this explanation was being delivered, the 1,000 mendicants, through lack of grasping, found release from the effluents of the mind from hearing these blessed words.
